Eating Out

Saturday June 6

D-Day Anniversary

Today is the 65th anniversary of the Allied Invasion of Europe. There was a big article of the cerimonies in France. The headline said that they had to get a German military band as the British is penny-pinching and didn't have enough bands there. This is ironic.

Lil told me to go to the reception building to meet Darid who can help me with getting Internet connection. I went there and he got me connected. However, when I got back to the house I did not get a signal. I went back to the office and asked him if he could come over and see what the problem is.

He did come over and tried to do what he could. He said it was strange that it didn't work. He brought his computer over and he got a signal. In fact, his computer is just like mine, made by the same company HP, while mine has the name Compaq on it. He couldn't do anythig and said he'd be back in about an hour. He did come back and got Yahoo for me, but as soon as he left I got no signal again.

It looks like I'll go to the pub and see if I can get a signal there.

This has been a stressful day. You would think it would be different, but because of the circumstances of selling the house and not getting Internet it was not a relaxing day.

Andrew did say he saw an Internet cafe in the tourist town nearby. So, I have this place as an option.

In the evening Andrew, Jayne, Jack and I went out to dinner. Lil didn't want to go. Andrew said he'd treat us. He called a restaurant named Tony's (an Italian restaurand). The reservation was for 9pm. We got there at 8.30pm as we planned to have a drink before we ate.

When we got to the restaurant the owner, Tony, said we are early. We said we have reservations but we would like to have a drink. He said there's a restaurant down the road we could go to. Can you imagine that! He lost some money by having us go somewhere else for drinks. He had a room that had no people in it. He could have easily have one of his waitresses serve us and it would have taken very little time to do it.

So we went to the restaurant about 200 meters away and had our drinks. I paid for the drinks, since Andrew will be paying for the meal. He had a beer, Jayne had a wiskey, Jack a soda and I had Guiness beer. The beer was real good. I was told that it's better than in England as the local beer they use better spring water. The bill came to £11 and some change - pretty expensive.

The tavern we were in is real nice. It had wood beams and white stucco walls - real quaint looking. Along the path to the tavern there was a stone wall with old-type lamps posts along the way.

About 9pm we walked to Tony's.

Andrew had a steak, Jayne chicken with prawns, Jack had a pizza, and I had spegetti (without the meal). I could have had salmon but the price was £12. I thought this would be too much, so I ordered the spegetti that was only £6. Vegetables came with the main dishes. Andrew ordered a pitcher (one liter) of red wine.

The meal was good but not top rated.

The restaurant was real nice inside, with different mugs on the shelf.

Then Andrew ordered another liter. Before he did we said we will not be having more wine. All he had was one glass out of that. Andrew said what a waste. I thought of an idea, and I told the waitress if the wine could be put in a wine bottle, and she said yes. So, there was nearly a whole bottle of wine to take home.

The bill came to £107! That's a lot of money.

Andrew drove to the restaurant and I drove home (he would be over the limit for driving).
It was a real nice evening and it was nice that Andrew treated us.
