Things will get worse under Obama

Tuesday January 20

Today is the swearing in of Barak Obama. The first mulleto president. He is not Black and he is not White – he’s half and half. Many people think he’s a Negro but ignore this.

I went to pay the electric and phone bills in town here. I paid for both my properties. Then I went the local supermarket to get some things that we needed.

Jayne and I went to Quito. First we went to the Papaya Net and they had the TV on with CNN News in English covering the swearing in. We had missed that part but we did see was Obama walking Bush to the helicopter. Then the guy at the restaurant turned to a Spanish music station.

The problems will get worse for America in all areas of life. Those who support him now will change their tune in six months. And God will curse his people for having an Alien rule over them – just read all the passages in the Bible when this happened.

I bet that the first laws that he passes will take away more of our freedom (and all those thereafter)!

Of course, Obama is not a legal President either, as he was not born in the United States – which is required by the Constitution – but in British ruled Kenya.

I saw a couple of videos the other day on the internet of Obama talking without the prompt cards and it was really bad. He forgot some words, he paused a lot and repeated some words like, “no” and “but”. He’s not good at speaking and making himself clear without a speech writer!

After eating and going on the internet we went to Matt’s office. We passed where I pay for my property tax but there were a lot of people there so I’ll go back another time. I still have a couple of months to pay it.

When we got to Matt’s office my lawyer, Maria, was there. So we had to wait. When we got tired of waiting we told him that we’ll go and have some coffee. On the way to the restaurant we found out from a store owner that to Ecuadorian girls tried to pick our pockets. When they attempted to do, as we were told, it was to cut the backpack I was carrying the pocket book that Jayne was carrying!

Another damn thing about Ecuador! You got to keep a watch on who is walking near you. It happened that I had turned around when I saw a girl out of the corner of my eye and Jayne had done the same thing.

The store that we stopped in who told us that was where we were going to buy some DVDs, which we did. Then we stopped for our coffee.

Back at Matt’s office, he paid me for the rent that was collected from the tenant of mine. Then we chatted about Tarquin and his problem.

Then it was off to home by taxi.

Visited My Lawyer

Monday January 19

I went to Quito today. I had called my lawyer’s office first to see if she was in but was told that she’d be back in one hour. So I had something to eat then went on the internet. From there I went to her office.

Maria told me that Jayne’s paperwork for her visa will be ready next week. Then she’ll call me for Jayne to come in with her passport. I told her about me selling my house and ask her clients who might be interested in buying it.

Maria already heard the news about Tarquin, a client of hers, as he or his wife must have called her office before she came back from her trip.

I then went to the bank to pick up the money that Jayne’s mother sent. Later I called Matt to see if I could meet him. He wasn’t in, but about 10 minutes later he returned the call. He told me that he had two calls from the newspaper ad but they want to meet him in his office first. I hope that this turns into a sale.

Jayne told me that Gonzalo called and asked if he could come in Wednesday. She said yes. He has a hernia problem so I don’t know if he had the operation or not. If he did, that is soon that he is coming back to work.

Our Ad in the Newspaper

Sunday January 18

Today the ad for the house should be in the newspaper. Jayne and I did what we could to get the house ready in case someone comes by today. I think that Matt would answer his cell phone. I know he would not be in his office. He goes to church so I know he would not have his phone on. Normally, he goes to his farm on eth weekend but he will be in the city each weekend until the end of January.

So far no call from Matt.

I got a thought about clients coming over. We have to watch the people that we show the house to. I thought that we have to watch when they are in the rooms to make sure that they don’t go in the draws. And when we are finished showing a room and taking them to another room to make sure that everyone leaves together. I will not be surprised that parents will bring their children and it’s usually the children that would still be in the room while the rest of the family follows me to another room.

With the thieving that goes on in Ecuador it could be deliberate where the parent will tell the child to take something out of the drawer. Or it could be the parent that does it. Since Jayne and I are still living here, we have to put our valuable somewhere. And when strangers come here they know that what’s valuable has to be in the drawer.

We know that workers had taken things right under our noses. Thieves in other countries would be more careful. So, we have to be on extra alert!

Jayne Feels Better Today!

Saturday January 17

Jayne feels better today – thank God! I told her to just have fruit or juices as this would be better for her body to heal. She didn’t feel well enough to go out so I went out.

I went to another internet cafĂ© as the restaurant might still be having problems and I don’t want to lug my computer around. After the Internet I went to a supermarket that is nearby and bought some a bag of carrots so Jayne can have fresh carrot juice.

In the meantime, Jayne washed the sheets on the bed.

Monday I’ll have to go to Quito as I was told that I have to go to the bank and convert the money that Jayne’s mother sent us for Christmas. Why they can’t put it in my account, I don’t know. Then I’ll have to stop in my lawyer’s office and see what the status is on Jayne’s visa.

I do know that at one point Jayne will have to come in with her passport and possibly her one Ecuadorian ID for the next step of the visa process.

I’ll ask my lawyer if she knows about Tarquin’s situation as he has her for his real estate transactions. Plus he’s a personal friend of Maria, too. I’ll be telling Maria that I plan to sell my properties here, too. Perhaps she has a client who would be interested in buying the house.

Today the classified ad will be in the Quito newspaper. We do pray that we get a buyer that will pay my asking price. This one ad cost $30. This sounds like the price that you’d expect to pay in the States. I don’t know why it’s so high!

My Contractor Lied

Friday January 16

Jayne got up early today and feels better. I’m very glad about that.

I got a call from Galo, my former Contractor, and he asked me for a favor. He would like to borrow the drawing for the apartments that the architect gave me. he said that he has a customer would like to build four apartment. I told him I need the originals to show clients as this is a big selling point. He said he’d make a copy and give them back to me. I said ok, but I’ll be at the internet at the mall but he can stop by and pick them up from Jayne.

What I did right away was take pictures of the plans in case it’ll be a long time before I get them back. Then Jayne and I discussed it. We thought better to take those digital pictures and put them on a CD and let him make copies from that.

The reason for this is, we hope to have customers come and look at the property real soon as the ad will be in the newspaper tomorrow. It’s better to show them the originals. With Galo’s history there were times he was supposed to be here and he wasn’t. Also it could be a couple of weeks before he gets around to bringing them in the first place. And they can be dirty and torn when they are returned.

If Galo stops by my home first Jayne will tell him to go to the mall. If he comes here first I’ll give him the CD. From there he can make photos from them, or if he needs the original size he can go to another place to get them printed in large format. If the client has an email address he can email them and blow them up on the computer – which would be better for him. But in no way will I give the originals. Jayne and I have too much experience with Ecuadorians!

When I got to the restaurant the manager, Pablo, told me that the last two days the connection was slow – which is true as when I was here two days ago it was slow. He said he called the Provider to fix the problem.

Now, when I logged on I have no connection. So I’m sitting here doing other things on my computer.

Galo came to the restaurant and said he was sorry that he was late (what else is new). I gave him the CD and told him that he can print out the pictures or email them to his client. He said he needed the originals. I said that we need them to show clients as this is a good selling point. He said that they are his. I told him that he told us that they are free. He said no. and I said, “You told me they are free. That the architect did it for free. He repeat “No. I paid the architect to do it.” and that he needs them. I said ok. He said he’ll be back.

Another problem with Ecuadorians. Here is someone that I thought was trustworthy and he did help us out then he says something like this?

I called Jayne up and told her about this. She was furious, too. These people can’t be trusted in what they tell you.

I was about to eat when Galo came in. since the internet was not working, I didn’t stay long after I ate. Well, Galo didn’t come back from his meeting by the time I left. So I expect him to come to the house to pick up the original plans. Now these plans are not blueprints but simply drawings of what the apartments would look like.

While at the restaurant I did a search on my Diary. I did a search of “architect” and sure enough I found that I had written back on November 3 that the architect, Mario, made the first set of plans free and the second set for free, too. I remember him saying that he enjoys doing it.

There is proof, and you can go back on this Blog and see it.

I told Jayne that this reminded me of an old American saying: “Don’t be an Indian giver.” I said this is probably over 400 years old. There is truth in this. She had heard of this before and she laughed.

The Indians have been noted for giving you something and later wanting it back. So, it must be the same with South American Indians, too.

Then I thought of this and I told Jayne about Joanna who gave us the wedding magazines and said we could keep them. Then a few days after we cancelled doing business with her she called up to say she has a customer who needs them (you can read this on an earlier entry of this Diary). I told her that she said that she gave them to us, and she said, “No I didn’t.” I told her yes you did. Then later I wrote her that she can take it out of the $200 she kept as a deposit.

Notice how “ironic” that these people have a customer just a few days later. With Galo, it was a few days after I told him that I’m selling the property.

They are just liars.

Galo didn’t show up at our home and neither did he call. This is typical, but I do expect him to call another time to get them.

As it turned out, Galo didn’t show up or call to say he couldn’t make it.

Jayne and I talked to Mathieu this evening. Jayne told him that she couldn’t make it and that she was real sorry that she couldn’t come. She feels nausea now and has a stomach ache. Then I talked to him and answered his questions about Tarquin.

Mathieu told me that after he invited Tarquin to his farm to stay and to stay as long as he wanted, he said that Amparo was against this. (He told Tarquin this this past Sunday.) He agreed with her and said that he does not want to get involved ‘harboring a fugitive’. Matt told me that it was a bad idea to have Tarquin here. And that I could get in trouble.

When I told Jayne this we both thought that this was wrong of Matt and Amparo. Imagine them saying that!

Well, Mathieu and Amparo are wrong on several points.

1 – First and foremost is that Tarquin is NOT a fugitive. He has not be charged nor are they looking for him for questioning. He was told by his lawyers that this will probably happen next week so the lawyer suggested that he leave the country now.

2 – The police would have no idea that he was here. After all, how can they if he’s not wanted.

3 – How can they prove that we know that he’s wanted? He’s a friend, and we can prove this, and it’s common for one friend to put up another friend.

4 – IF he was wanted during this time the government would have to arrest everyone who met Tarquin during this time, which includes: his lawyer, the lawyer’s assistant, Tarquin’s wife, and his two managers.

Some people we call friends are really not friends when you are in trouble. Many times you don’t find this out until it’s too late. A friend is to help another friend in need. So you can sometimes find this about your friends when you hear them talk about what they would do or wouldn’t do in a certain situation. If that’s the way a friend is, keep in mind if you are in a situation like this that you don’t tell them a damn thing about your legal or possible legal problems!

Our Guest Left Today

Thursday January 15

I got up, showered and went to the kitchen about 7am. Tarquin was already up but still in his bed clothes. Then he showered, got his son ready then said he was ready to leave.

Jayne was sick today as she was yesterday but I asked her if she wanted to get up to say goodbye to Tarquin. She got up and said goodbye. They left about 7.50am.

About 8.30am my gardener came over. After he was finished I asked him to come back next week. I want to have the yard look nice whenever a buyer comes over, as I’m selling the house.

About 1pm I went to the mall to check my email.

I sent emails to Matt and another guy to say that we might not be able to go to the party. The party is by an American couple who bought a flat in Quito. I don’t know them well but we have met. Jayne was looking forward to going but if she doesn’t fell 100% by tomorrow we won’t go.

The Contractor who did work on my house called to see if he could stop by to pick up the scaffolding that he left here (and forgot all about it until I told him). He said he will contact his real estate friend to come by and look at the property.

The Jayne got up for a few minutes. Then she went back to bed.

The electricity went off three times today! This is unusual as the electricity last went off over a month ago, and whenever it went off it was just one time – not three times in one day.

Wednesday January 14

Jayne didn’t feel good so she stayed in bed. She feels tired, but hasn’t thrown up or has a headache. I hope she feels better soon.

My worker came today. He said that he can’t work for a couple of weeks as he found out he has a hernia. He will need an operation. I feel sorry for him and hope for his recovery. Tarquin said that I would like someone to come one day a week to do weeding. Gonzalo said that he will ask his brother if he can do it. Otherwise I’ll wait until he returns to work.

I would like someone to come and keep the garden nice. The person I have that cuts the grass wants too much to weed so that is why I want someone else.

Then Tarquin went to the church plaza to meet his son. His mother-in-law took him by taxi, and then she went back to Quito. Tarquin came back in the taxi and we went to the mall. I had to go to the mall to go on the internet. Jayne did not get out of bed when I left.

I went on the internet while Tarquin and Martin walked around the mall. When they came back to the restaurant we all ate. I just had breakfast while he had lunch. Tarquin said earlier said that he would like to treat Jayne and me to lunch or dinner. So we’ll do this after Jayne gets better.

Tarquin bought some toys for his boy while at the mall. Later we had coffee at a coffee shop in the mall. He asked me to watch him while he went into another store. Then his son emptied the bucket that has his ‘building blocks’ inside and just dumped them on the seat and floor. While I observed this I notice something strange. He did not play with them and put the blocks together. He just looked at them like just pieces of things that he didn’t know what to do with! I showed him how one piece connected to another, but his attention span and interest was not there.

Then we went back home. When we got there I noticed that Jayne was still in bed.

When Tarquin’s son and I were on the patio he had dumped out the blocks again. He took a broom and swept them up as if it was trash. I noticed how strange. When I was his age (about 3-4) I was playing with blocks and knew how to build things. But for Martin this is beyond him.

I didn’t have to be shown at his age how to play with blocks, I automatically did it. I remember that I was given a bag of wooden blocks that was my father’s as a child and they were not like the Lego blocks that they make today where you can see how they connect. You had to carefully put one wooden block on top of another.

His child looks normal but he doesn’t act normal. It could be because his parents don’t spend quality time with him.

Years ago I read something about what was on National Geographic and the article said how they have to train Negros adults in Africa how to use a shovel and move dirt from one area to another. The author went on to say, “Have you ever had to train your child how to use a shovel? No. When you went to the beach with your child you gave him/her a shovel and bucket and they automatically start shoveling and putting sand in the bucket.”

Earlier I told Tarquin that I have some cartoons for him to watch. He said that he’s too young to watch them. He has to see something with colors and images. His son is really behind his age group. His son looks normal, he doesn’t look like he’s retarded or has Down’s syndrome, which would explain his actions.

When we were in the supermarket his son started to open the package of butter that I bought. When we got to the cashier she noticed that the plastic container of milk was leaking. So, he must have squeezed that, too!

Can you imagine if you had this much trouble with your child? I think this stems from the child not being correct as he grows up, and I don’t mean just with words but using the back of your hand – assuming the child can connect a little pain with what he/she did wrong.

It’s not that I’m a genius but I believe that most children of my generation are much further ahead than the generation of today. If children today are brought up with the morals and parental guidance as they did years ago they would be smarter and much better behaved. This is true when I was a child. But sad to say, Tarquin’s children are not like this.

One more thing about his son – who is 3 and closer for 4 years old – that he still wears diapers (nappies)! I noticed that when every his son did something in his pants Tarquin would say, “What did you do? Did you do a poo in your pants?” then he would smile. Now, here is a boy who is at least 3.5 years old and his father (and I presume his mother, too) does nothing to correct him. When you just say “What did you do” and smile, the child doesn’t learn has he thinks that everything is normal. What should be done is saying something like this, “Now you tell me when you have to pee or poo and I’ll take you to the toilet.” And when he does go in his pants say, “Now I told you to tell me before you go that you have to use the toilet,” or “That’s not nice, you’re a big boy (or girl) and big boys/girls don’t go in their pants.”

That’s how a child learns.

Later in the afternoon, Tarquin had to go to the city to meet his lawyer. He took his son with him. He told me he’d be meeting his wife there and they will go out to eat. Then he’ll return in the evening.

Jayne got up for a short time in the afternoon (after Tarquin left) then went back to bed. I sure hope she feels better soon.

In the evening Tarquin and Martin came back here. Katherine and one of his workers – Daniel – drove them back. Tarquin said his goodbyes to the worker and his wife.

At this time Jayne got up, as she was in bed all day. This was about 8pm.

Tarquin told us what happened. He said he met with his lawyer and his assistant. He found out that the State plans to detain him in the near future. He found this out by having a paid a worker to get the information. It was suggested that he leave the country as soon as possible. Though he said it will probably be a week before they issue the orders.

Even though he is just a suspect, they will keep you in prison until it goes to court. He did not know if they have bail or how much it would be if such as the case. Tarquin doesn’t want to spend any time in jail.

He went on to explain that the government will not issue and extradition orders on someone who is just a suspect. But I don’t know about that, as when people do become ‘fugitives’ it’s before a person goes to court. However with a fugitive it is a crime in the U.S. I don’t know about here.

So he plans to leave the country by way of crossing the border in Columbia. This is the easiest way to leave the country. Then he’ll fly to Argentina. The reason why he’s going there is that his wife plans to go to culinary school there to learn more about cooking. She made these plans back in the summer and already paid half the price. She still plans to go through with it, so by Tarquin being there he can find a flat for him and his family to live. The school starts March 1. He’ll also be able to find a school for his older son.

Life and business life is very fragile. Here is a good guy who wouldn’t hurt anyone now has to flee the country, leave his family and business behind.

He’s not charged with anything yet, they just want to detain him. Just on this bases it’s not right and there is no justice in putting someone in jail who is not charged with anything. I don’t blame him for leaving, I would, too, and so would others.

I talked to Tarquin about his property and he told me that the property is all in his wife’s name. however, they had bought (with financing) an apartment in Quito and I asked him about that. he said that they will keep it. They already paid $10,000. I suggested that if it comes to selling everything he can sell it (like millions do) before it’s paid off.

Another thought that I got later is, that he should give power of attorney to his lawyer (the same one that I have) if it has to be sold when neither of them can come back to the country. But I’m sure he didn’t do this. Maria, the lawyer, didn’t fly back from her trip to Spain until today and probably won’t be in the office until tomorrow. With such a long trip she will probably be home sleeping today and tomorrow. When she does go in when probably has so many things to do.

We chatted until about 10.30pm. Tarquin put his son to bed first then he watched a DVD for about 20 minutes while Jayne and I went to bed.
